Let’s face it. If your blog or website is not available on the iPhone these days you are losing a lot of potential visitors (and some credibility, too!). A large part of the popular use the device to surf the web these days, and that’s why you need to make sure that your website can be viewed with it. If you are not sure, don’t worry. Below I present five ways to achieve it.
1. WPTouch
If you blog is a WordPress self-hosted one, the best plugin that you can use is WPTouch. This plugin does one thing and does it so well – transform your blog into an iPhone application-style theme when viewed from an iPhone. The plugin even has a complete Ajax loading bar for articles and effects. It also lets you customize many aspects of your blog’s appearance and delivers a fast, user-friendly and stylish version of your site well suited for touch mobile visitors.
2. iMT
If you are using Movable Type instead you can download and install a plugin called iMT. It does pretty much the same thing, creating a special version of your blog that will be displayed to visitors coming from the iPhone and similar devices. The plugin should also be compatible with most Android devices according to the developers.
3. Bloapp
Who says you need some coding knowledge to create an iPhone app for your blog? Thanks to some free services available on the web, you can now easily create an iPhone app for your blog. One of these free services is Bloapp. And guess what, it will only take five minutes to create such an iPhone app right after you’ve registered for a free account. Registering is easy as well, just provide some information about your blog, add a logo if you want, and select the color scheme that your blog will take – in a flash, you’ll have the iPhone app for your blog.
3. AppMkr
Now if you like to have a real iPhone app otherwise known as native iPhone app, one of the option you have is AppMakr. However, unlike bloapp, this service is not free. Currently, the site will charge you $199 to create a native iPhone app for your blog after you’ve registered for an account. If you don’t mind paying that much, then you’ll be glad to know that creating the app is very easy. The service gives you pre-defined template to use for your blog’s iPhone app. The app lets you add your app’s logo and blog’s header image.
4. iBuildApp
If AppMakr is too expensive for you but you really want to create a native iPhone app for your blog, then you’re best bet would have to be iBuildApp. Creating a native iPhone app using this service is very easy to. It’s online interface works fast and in just 4 easy steps, you’ll have your blog’s iPhone app ready for submission to the App Store. The app lets you customize your app’s background as well as upload an icon for your app.
5. Creating a blog icon
If you don’t want an app version of your site, your blog visitors option is to save your blog as a bookmark on their mobile Safari browser and possibly add it to their iPhone’s homescreen. The problem with this method is that it will use a generic icon for your blog. To make things cooler, why not create an iPhone icon for your blog which your visitor will have once they’ve saved your site on their iPhone’s homescreen? Doing this only entails a few steps. First, create a 57×57 pixels icon and name it – “apple-touch-icon.png”. Upload this to the root directory of your blog and voila! The next time your blog visitors save your blog as bookmark and add it to their iPhone’s homescreen the blog icon you created will be displayed.
