AT&T Phasing Out Video Share Service

    • AT&T will shut down its long-running Video Share service later this year, making room for a new generation of mobile video services that have gained in prominence.
    • "As we look ahead to the next generation of live, mobile video calling services, we're evaluating new platforms and other ways we can evolve our mobile video calling offers," said a spokesperson for the Dallas, Tex.-based carrier. "We've already begun to notify subscribers directly and will work with them to adjust their monthly charges accordingly. The service will be retired later this year."
The phase-out comes as more and more smartphones become equipped with front- and rear-facing cameras for video calling and conferencing, especially the iPhone with its FaceTime app and new models of Android handsets.
AT&T this year has already rolled out handsets like theMotorola Atrix, which comes with two cameras for video calling.
Apps like Skype, Fring and Qik have sprung up as well, which now let users participate in live video-chat and other messaging communications. Some speculate that the company is testing these services as possible third-party solutions to replace Video Share.
The Video Share service, which rolled out in 2007, was intended for feature phones with 3G and streaming-capable cameras and never really caught on with customers in the first place.
