A report has come in from former Engadget editor Joshua Topolsky where he reveals information on the next gen iPhone 5. However, this information completely contradicts all the other recent claims.
For a start, he reckons that the iPhone 5 will be completely redesigned, and will look more like an iPod touch than the iPhone 4. We have had reports before that a design like this might happen, but more recent reports state that the iPhone 5 will be largely unchanged from the iPhone 4.
Another interesting feature he mentions is that the home button will be doing “double duty” and act as a button, and a gesture area.
this falls in line with testing we?ve seen for gestures on the iPad, and our sources say that gestures are definitely coming in a future version of iOS. The home button will likely be enlarged, but not scrapped altogether.
Instead of the 4-inch screen which everyone reckons is coming to the iPhone 5, Joshua says his sources have told him it will go up to 3.7-inches. He says that the front of the phone will have almost no bezel surround, and the screen will occupy the whole front. The “sources” say that Apple are even looking at incorporating the earpiece and sensors behind the glass itself.
Joshua makes a very good point about the screen size. A 3.7-inch screen can have a pixel density of 312, but thats a drop of 13 ppi from the 326 on the current iPhone 4. The claim is that anything over 300 ppi is classed as a retina display, but if Apple went up to the 4inch screen, this would drop to 288, so technically it wouldn’t be a retina display.

Joshua makes some fairly valid points, particularly about the display size. He does not that he has multiple sources who claim that Apple is testing a couple of different models of the iPhone 5, and this is what has been seen by some of them.
