Google acquired mobile application developer PushLife, in what may be a step towards creating its own music store service.
The acquisition comes with content synchronization knowledge that could bolster Google's cloud music service ambitions. The Toronto-based company creates a service that allows Android and BlackBerry devices to sync with iTunes and Windows Media Player song libraries.
PushLife has also created applications that allow users to combine their existing song libraries with downloads from a carrier's music service.
Google hasn't announced exactly what it plans to do with PushLife, and the newly acquired company only said on its website that it will "be working on building better mobile applications for all users."
A streaming music service from Google could be exciting simply because of the company's reputation for innovative "free" -- advertising supported -- products. What such a service might looks like is uncertain, but if it follows the mold of other efforts like Gmail and Android, it will cost users nothing and offer a lot, in exchange for targeted ads.
Google's possible entry into the music streaming space would be bigger news if there weren't already a number of Internet giants muscling into the market.
Amazon introduced "Cloud Drive" for storing music and Cloud Player for streaming music to Macs, PCs and Android devices in March, and Apple's iOS 5 upgrade may well come with cloud services for iTunes and MobileMe.
These big players join specialized streaming music services like Spotify, Pandora and Rhapsody that are pushing smartphones to the center of the growing digital music ecosystem.
Reports surfaced in late March that Google was testing Google Music internally. Hackers also found an Android Music software update last week and said the upgrade included an option to cache music in a cloud and stream it.
