Apple Acknowledges IPad 2 Issues

Apple admitted Friday that there is a connectivity problem for Verizon customers with the iPad 2, a hitch the recalls other recent product glitches.

"We are aware that a small number or iPad 2 customers have experience connectivity issues with the Verizon 3G network and we are investigating it," Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said in a statement.

Customers have been reporting problems with the iPad 2 failing to reconnect to the Verizon 3G network after the connection is turned off. The Apple support forum and discussion boards have reflected this, filling up with similar complaints since days after the iPad 2 was introduced last month.

A company spokeswoman wouldn't say how many iPads were affected, what the fix might be, or how soon a remedy might be sent out. Verizon declined to comment on the matter.

Since its debut last month, the iPad 2 has been in short supply, with buyers scouring stores, online retailers -- and even eBay -- to secure a device.

The malfunction, if not addressed fully and quickly, could provide a window for iPad competitors like Motorola's Xoom or Research in Motion's PlayBook. Competing tablets could also benefit from Apple's supply issues, especially if parts shortages prolong delays. Nevertheless, Apple is expected to maintain between 70 and 80 percent of the tablet market in 2011, according to analysts.

While Apple has faced issues with their suite of products before, including the much publicized antenna problem with the iPhone 4 last year, this is the first acknowledgement of an issue with the very popular second generation iPad tablet. But "antenna gate" and complaints that the iPhone 4's glass back is particularly fragile haven't done much to reduce the device's popularity, and this issue will most likely not dent the iPad 2's popularity with consumers as well.

If the Verizon iPad 2's problem is determined to be software-related, it might be addressed with a fix in the upcoming release of iOS 4.3.2, which some predict might be out by month's end.

A sampling of user reported fixes for the Verizon 3G connectivity problem include turning on the cellular data switch and then rebooting the tablet, as well as erasing the iPad 2 after backing up the data. So far, the problem is limited to Verizon; there have been reports of the issue with the AT&T models of the device.
